Disposal of Garbage
1. Landfill
In our everyday activities, a lot of waste is generated in the form of old rags, plastic wastes, food, fruit and vegetable peelings, paper, etc.
This waste is usually collected from each and every household and disposed to a vast area of open land. In this land, workers separate wastes that can be recycled from the one which cannot be recycled.
Some wastes are recycled, while the ones that cannot be recycled are then spread out on the land and topped up with soil. This process is known as a landfill. This land cannot be used for construction purposes until 20 years.
2. Composting
Certain garbage such as kitchen garbage, i.e., tea leaves, fruit and vegetable peelings, leftover food are considered as biodegradable garbage and are used for composting. Kitchen garbage is usually dug up in the soil for a period of time until the garbage has completely degraded in the soil.
This soil, rich in minerals can then be used as manure for agricultural purposes. Hence it is necessary to practice the habit of separating our biodegradable garbage from non-degradable garbage like broken glass, plastic waste, and aluminum wrappers. 3. Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is a technique of composting garbage with the help of red earthworms. Red earthworms, also commonly known as ‘farmer’s friend’ help in the degradation of kitchen garbage at a sooner rate. Red worms thus enable composting and provide rich minerals to the soil, resulting in a better yield of the plant products.
4. Recycling of paper
Old newspapers, used stationeries, books, can be easily recycled at home to produce a fresh piece of paper.
To perform paper recycling, collect written books, old newspapers, etc from home and cut them into small bit pieces.
Soak the paper piece in water overnight with the papers fully submerged in water. Next, make a thick paste of the paper by pounding on it.
Then spread the paste on a wire mesh fixed to the frame.
Keep the thickness uniform and let it dry until all the water has been drained off. Then remove the paper from the frame and dry it under the sun. The recycled fresh paper is ready to use.
5. Plastics – Non-biodegradable wastes
It is difficult to handle plastic waste as they are non-biodegradable. Even after composting for years together, plastic still remains the same. Also, burning and heating of plastics result in the release of toxic gasses that are hazardous to health.
